Worthington Public Utilities, through the Water and Light Commission, is responsible for the operational control and management of the municipal wastewater treatment and collection facilities in the City of Worthington. Wastewater from nearly all homes and businesses is conveyed to the municipal wastewater treatment facility through the sanitary sewer collection system where it is processed through a three-stage trickling filter plant designed to accommodate an average daily flow of 2,750,000 gallons and a peak flow of 4,000,000 gallons. Processed water is discharged to Okabena Creek in accordance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit #MN0031186, as issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
